Kabini, a rich biodiversity spot and tiger territory, sits on the edge of Nagarhole National Park. It connects Bandipur and Nagarhole parks, forming part of the Nilgiri Biosphere, one of India’s largest forest stretches. The Kabini River’s backwaters create a green oasis during dry months. Once a hunting ground for the Maharaja of Mysore, Kabini is now a wildlife haven with diverse species, including elephants, tigers, leopards, and the elusive black panther. The Kurubas, ancient shepherd clans, are the region’s caretakers, with Jenu Kurubas skilled in honey gathering and Kaadu Kurubas as forest masters.
